From “Thank You” to “Thank You and We Support You”: Strategies for Showing Appreciation and Prioritizing Mental Health

First responders are the heroes who stand on the front lines, ready to face danger and uncertainty every day. While expressing our gratitude is important, it’s essential that we go beyond simple "thank yous". We, as the community they serve, are responsible for making a genuine commitment to their well-being.

There are so many ways the community, first responder families, and municipalities can do this. Being an active listener, acts of service, and being flexible are among the simplest to show support. Here are some more ways on how municipalities can take meaningful steps to support these vital members of our communities.

Going Beyond Just Saying Thank You

Acknowledging the hard work and sacrifices of first responders is a crucial first step. They undergo life-threatening situations, provide critical care, and often work long and unpredictable hours. But appreciation should be more than words, it should translate into tangible support that addresses their challenges.

Municipalities should start by implementing specific actions that make a real difference in their employees lives. Some of these include flexible schedule options to help them keep a better balance of their work and personal lives. This can translate into shift swaps or consistency. Municipalities can also provide childcare options by providing affordable partnerships with local providers to alleviate some stress. Most importantly, municipalities should provide mental health benefits, like offering comprehensive coversage for counseling, therapy, and support groups. Ensurfing mental health resources are assessible and stigma-free is essential to first responders.

How Municipalities Can Promote a Culture of Mental Health

Building a work culture that priortitzes mental health involves normalizing seeking help. Municipalities should encourage open discussions about mental health and the importance of seeking help, training programs, and support from peers. This can foster a culture of strength in getting help rather than first responders looking at it as a weakness. Municipalities can also provide confidential mental health services where those who need help can get it without fear of judgement. Lastly, municipalities should incorporate regular mental health check-ins and wellness assessments. This can help determine the need for mental health resources and demonstrates a proactive approach before issues escalate.

Fostering a Strong Support System

First responders deserve more than just a pat on the back. By implementing mental health resources and fostering a culture of strength, municipalities can show a genuine commitment to their well-being. Creating such a culture will normalize seeking help and will enhance the first responders quality of life, ensuring they are equipped to serving our communities.
